Buffon out for three months after surgery
Italy and Juventus custodian Gianluigi Buffon has undergone back surgery and is expected to return after three months.
"I think between six and eight weeks will be needed for Buffon to begin rehabilitation and at least three months for him to return to playing," said Buffon's surgeon Maurizio Fornari.
"The surgery went very well and was needed to take the hernia in a less invasive manner in order to free the nerve that was suffering."
Buffon, 32, sustained that injury during Italy's opening game with Paraguay in the World Cup and was ruled out for the remainder of the tournament.
The Azzurri suffered without their talisman as they got dumped out of the group stage without scoring a single win.

Cristiano Ronaldo becomes a father
LISBON, July 4 (Reuters) - Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo announced on Sunday he has fathered a baby boy with a woman who has chosen to remain anonymous and with whom he has agreed to keep exclusive guardianship of the child.
"It is with great joy and emotion that I inform I have recently become father to a baby boy," Ronaldo, the world's most expensive player, said on his Facebook page.
"As agreed with the baby's mother, who prefers to have her identity kept confidential, my son will be under my exclusive guardianship."
The Real Madrid forward said no further information will be provided on the subject and asked "everyone to fully respect my right to privacy, and that of the child, at least on issues as personal as these".
Ronaldo, 25, captained Portugal during their World Cup campaign in South Africa, which ended with a 1-0 defeat to neighbours Spain in the second round last Tuesday.
The winger, who moved to Real Madrid from Manchester United for a record fee of 80 million pounds ($121.2 million) last year, played in all four of Portugal's World Cup matches, scoring one goal.
Uruguay forward Luis Suarez will be banned for only one match, following his red card in the World Cup quarter-final match with Ghana.
Suarez used his hands to deny Ghana a 120th minute goal, only for Asamoah Gyan to miss from the ensuing penalty and Uruguay to win the shootout.
Amid calls for an extended ban for the Ajax forward, FIFA ruled that he will only miss the semi-final tie with Holland.
"But the way in which I was sent off - truth is, it was worth it," Suarez said after the Ghana win.
The worst closure for Algeria
It's fair to describe Algeria's World Cup campaign as a complete and utter failure, with Rafik Saifi's appalling assault on a female journalist the worst possible closure.
Two 1-0 losses to Slovenia and USA as well as a goalless draw with England caused Algeria to embarrassingly bow out of the group stage without scoring a single goal.
The Desert Foxes weren't really tipped to raise eye-brows in FIFA's primary competition. Their ultra-defensive playing style is anything but enjoyable and their capabilities are by far inadequate.
But what was really staggering is the moral degeneration of the only Arab representatives at the World Cup.
In the gigantic competition's qualifiers and the 2010 African Cup of Nations, the Algerian players' out-of-place violence during open play and heated protests against referees drew a wave of criticism against them.
Their aggressive attitude remained the same over their three World Cup matches, where they received two red cards, before Saifi, the oldest player in the Algerian squad, tarnished his team's image even more.
Saifi represents Algeria as their most experienced veteran, but instead of setting a good example for his younger teammates he showed how nasty he can get.
Following his side's defeat by USA, the 35-year-old headed towards Asma Halimi in the interview zone and slapped her across the face without saying a word, before she hit him back.
It's widely believed that Saifi beat Algerian columnist Halimi because he was enraged by an opinion article she wrote about him.
The FC Istres forward represents Algeria as their most experienced veteran, but instead of setting a good example for his younger teammates he showed how nasty he can get.
Saifi hit a woman only because she criticized him as part of her job. I wonder what he would have done to a male critic!
He basically gave the whole world the impression that the Algerian players are not only belligerent on the pitch, but off it as well.
So now, what Algeria will be remembered for? Their dull displays and immorality.
